Overview

This training is mandatory for anyone selling, serving or supplying alcohol in NSW. It covers topics like liquor laws, the responsible service of alcohol and harm minimisation. You must complete the training with an Approved Training Provider (ATP) and get a competency card to work in the industry.

The purpose of Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) training is to:

  • Give you the knowledge and skills to meet your responsibilities under the NSW liquor laws
  • Help you understand and appreciate the importance of your role as a staff member in the NSW liquor industry
  • Help minimise alcohol-related harms.

NSW-specific topics:

  • NSW liquor laws and responsible alcohol service
  • Managing intoxication: helping customers drink responsibly, assessing intoxication, and refusing service
  • Preventing underage drinking: ID checks and preventing secondary supply
  • Harm minimisation strategies
  • Compliance and enforcement

Duration: Mandatory minimum 6 hours in the classroom

Entry Requirements

  • It is recommended to complete the RSA course shortly before turning 18. This ensures your certification is valid and ready for use as soon as you are legally allowed to serve alcohol in NSW.
  • Students are required to provide photo ID on the day of training.
  • Students must complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy quiz prior to enrolment.

What You Will Receive

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment and an Interim Certificate, which is valid for 90 days and allows you to work immediately. To obtain a NSW RSA competency card, present your interim certificate to a Service NSW centre.
