Short Course Description:

RIISS00054 Traffic Controller Skill Set:
This course addresses the skills and knowledge for those responsible for stopping and starting traffic in temporary traffic management using a stop/slow bat or boom gate. This program is a good entry point for those wishing to establish themselves into the traffic control/management industry

RIISS00055 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set:
This course addresses the skills and knowledge for personnel responsible for traffic management on a site to implement a work zone traffic management plan in the immediate vicinity of a workplace. This program is suited to those who have traffic controller experience and wish to further their career within the traffic control/management industry


Entry requirements or Pre-requisites:

  • Students must be 17 years of age or over on the day the training commences.
  • Students must present 100 points of ID prior to commencing training and/or assessment. This must be original forms of ID, no photocopies will be accepted.
  • In order to complete the live-site practical assessment to achieve final competency, students must hold a White Card and provide evidence of this to the trainer prior to assessment.
  • Students must also present to the final assessment in suitable clothing and footwear – long pants, long sleeve shirt and work boots.

Documents issued on successful completion:

Upon successful completion of the training component, you will receive a SafeWork NSW Statement of Completion for Traffic Controller and Implement Traffic Management Plan Modules of training. This SOC will be valid for a period of three (3) months and will allow you to work on a traffic control worksite. 

Upon successful provision of Employer testimonials and workplace evidence, and completion of practical observation assessment, you will receive a Statement of Attainment issued by the RTO for the units of competency completed and a SafeWork NSW card for the Traffic Controller and Implement Traffic Management Plan Modules of training.

RIISS00054 Traffic Controller Skill Set

  • Stop/direct road users using a stop/slow bat and understand stopping sight distances.
  • Monitor traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs according to traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes.
  • Maintain traffic incident reports.
  • Understand the Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs) also known as Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) for the site.
  • Assess and respond to changes in the environment, for example traffic volumes, weather conditions, road conditions, Work Health and Safety (WHS) and operational requirements.
  • Carry out risk assessments for personal safety.
  • Participate in toolbox talks (specific to traffic control).
  • Use communication methods and devices.
  • Conform to traffic control policy and procedures.

RIISS00055 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set

  • Identify safety implications of traffic control at road works and personal responsibilities.
  • Set up, monitor and close down traffic control devices according to a nominated TGS/TMP, to WHS and legislative requirements.
  • Operate a two-way radio correctly and effectively.
  • Check, clean and store equipment on completion of work and close down a TGS/TMP.
  • Know the basic function of the TGS/TMP system.
  • Locate and apply required legislations, documentation, policies and procedures including documentation required for worksite projects and required traffic management.
  • Locate and apply required legislation, regulations, codes and procedures including Austroads Codes of Practice and WHS applicable to temporary traffic management.
  • Adapt to all work health and safety (WHS) and operational requirements.
  • Use the site/location assessment, distinguish topographical landmarks and carry out authorised risk control.
  • Conduct an onsite check of a TGS/TMP to identify any unexpected risks/hazards.
  • Plan for emergencies that may arise.
  • Ensure spacing between signs and traffic control devices is in line with a TGS/TMP.
  • Understand speed, environment, type and class of vehicles, traffic density, sight lines, environmental conditions, weather patterns and surface type.
  • Maintain traffic incident reports.
  • Monitor traffic controllers.

Course duration:

2 days (12 hours Training session)
½ day (3 hours Practical Assessment)

Assessments Conducted:

Students will be required to meet the minimum requirements for assessment, including:

  • Complete full duration of face-to-face training.
  • Complete the theory assessment for all units of competency.
  • Supply minimum of 1 completed Employer Testimonial for Traffic Controller, completed by relevant workplace supervisor, along with provision of workplace samples and documentation.
  • Supply minimum of 2 completed Employer Testimonials for Implement TCP’, completed by relevant workplace supervisor, along with provision of workplace samples and documentation.
  • Complete a practical assessment on a live worksite under the observation of a SafeWork NSW approved trainer/assessor.

NOTE: Students have the option to complete their final, live-site practical assessment with ATPlus. The student must confirm their booking for the final assessment with ATPlus and ensure payment is made prior to attending.
